Jeff Ittel - Green Prairie Sod

Hello, My name is Jeff Ittel and I raise turfgrass sod. I am married to Michele and we have four children. Jahni, Holly, Madison, and Joe.

This operation is set up in partnership with my parents, John and Phyllis and my brother Jerry. We have been raising sod since 1981 when dad planted the first crop. The fall of 1983 dad asked me if I would be interested in returning to the farm and running the sod operation. I had always wanted to get back on the farm, so I said yes. That next spring, March 5, 1984 to be exact, I started my present position of farm manager.

We currently have 560 acres of farm land, 430 tillable. 150 acres is devoted to sod and nursery production. The remaining acreage is corn and soybeans.

I look forward to reporting about sod farming for this month of August. August for most farmers is a slow month. The crops are in and fertilizer and pest control has been applied. This may be their first break since planting began back in the spring. For us here at Green Prairie, August is a very important and busy month. This is the month everything starts. This is when we plant the crop.

I hope that you find what I do interesting and check back in often.

Jeff Ittel
