Saturday, January 1, 2011 Happy New Year!  We had a fun time ringing in the new year with three 4-H families.  We didn’t get home until 1:45 a.m., and then up at 6 a.m. to take care of the animals.  No time to sleep in for us.  We were so happy to have a mild winter day as compared to the much colder days in December.  Toni drove a few minutes away to another farm to take care of the feeding.  Sur...

December 27, 2010   Monday: It seems to be very cold out this morning. I took Teddy for a walk, then went to do the milking and feed calves. One of my weaned calves is sick so I moved him inside the barn. I hope he does ok. I had a dentist appointment today. We have the parts in for our chopper so we are working on putting it back together again. Bill is not working today so I am doing the evenin...

Diary of Nancy Powell - Week 5- Dec. 27-31

Published Jan. 3, 2011

Monday - December 27, 2010 Well, it’s another really cold morning.  I guess I should be happy that the big blizzard of 2010 went south of us and hit the east coast instead of burying us in two feet of snow.  I like winter weather as long as it is not in the extreme, too cold or too deep!  Dewey is still not feeling well so I am letting him sleep in another day.  I am getting all of my micro chippi...

Meet A Farmer- Jeff Schwab and Family

Published Dec. 28, 2010

Jeff, Toni, Lauren and Ryan are the family behind the Schwab Family Farm in Butler County.  We proudly produce pork as a high quality and nutritious food for the American people.  Our farm is a breed to wean operation.  We don’t raise crops and only have a few cows to keep the pastures cleaned up.  So we like to say we do one thing and do it well since we are a small family operation.  Neither Jef...

December 20, 2010 Monday: All this snow is pretty but I could do without it. It makes life on a farm more work.  The cows seem to get used to it but I prefer warmer weather. My son Keith doesn't think it is cold since he is from Alaska. We did the usual milking and feeding. All the equipment is working so that helps. Keith is helping me with my new laptop and transferring programs and files over t...

Monday – December 20, 2010 Just feeding the goats today like usual so I will take this opportunity to tell you about the Zoo.  Last spring we got a call from the Cincinnati zoo.  They wanted to talk about purchasing some goats.  Well, my first thought was “they want them to feed to the lions” but that was not what they wanted – thankfully.  They had expanded their petting zoo and were looking for ...
