It’s so close, you can almost taste it.

The 2012 Salt Market Place and Cook Show is just days away. Nervous and excited chefs have been busy preparing their dishes for the cooking demonstrations. The show will be Tuesday, Oct. 16 at the Roberts Convention Centre on Gano Road, near Wilmington. Doors open at 4 p.m. and the cook show will start at 6:30 p.m.

Non-perishable or canned food items will be collected at the cooking show for local food pantries. The donor of non-perishable or canned food will receive a ticket for a drawing for great prizes. There is no limit on the amount of food that can be donated.

“We’re so excited to be able to support local food pantries,” said Pamela Stricker, publisher of Salt magazine and the Wilmington News Journal. “And, as always, we’re excited to spend time with our readers,” Stricker said.

Roberts Centre Executive Chef Martin Barkalow will be creating an ice sculpture in the lobby as guests arrive.

Demonstrations will be given by Molly Dullea, owner of the General Denver Hotel, who will prepare oven-roasted pork with carmelized onion and apple and roasted fall vegetables.

Billy Kong, owner of No. 1 China Buffet, will show how to do stir-fry right and how to make the perfect rice.

The owner of The Mediterranean Restaurant, Sharon Testa, will share her secrets as she demonstrates making moussaka.

 

Natalie Geer Brunk, owner of Shoelaces Catering in New Vienna, will show how to prepare spinach artichoke dip and how it can be served multiple different ways.

Sheryl Sollars, food contributor to Salt and other newspapers, will demonstrate her recipes for creamy chocolate cheesecake and cranberry fluff salad.

Andrea Chaffin, News Journal staff writer, will be sharing her apple butter pumpkin pie.

Attendees will be able to follow along with the chefs during the demonstrations. All the recipes that are prepared that day, plus many more, will be published in the next edition of Salt magazine.

A number of vendors, including a wine and cheese bar, will also be on hand.

Participants have gobbled up the VIP tickets, but general admission tickets are still available for $12. Each ticket holder will receive a tote bag, Salt magazine, goodies, samples and the opportunity to win a host of door prizes.

Tickets are available at the Wilmington News Journal, Xenia Daily Gazette, Washington Court House Record-Herald, Hillsboro Times Gazette, Georgetown News Democrat and West Union People’s Defender. Look for the News Journal booth at Kroger in Wilmington to buy tickets over weekend, as well as on Monday.
