Hazel Grove Farm Bureau Community Council is pleased to welcome the Garden of Weedin’ to our collaboration on the first Farm to Plate event. The Garden of Weedin’ has provided the lettuce mix for the starter kits.  This blend has Tango, Royal Oak Leaf, Red Salad Bowl, Black Seeded Simpson and Red Sails leaf lettuces.

Howard and Kathy Bair are local gardeners and have been attending the Shelby Farmers Market every Saturday morning. Kathy says they started with a small garden for personal use but found they had plenty to share. The garden has expanded to a 40 foot by 60 foot plot and includes tomatoes, peppers cucumbers and sweet corn in addition to the lettuces.

Farm to Plate is proud to be able to provide Howard and Kathy’s select blend lettuce in the 25 starter kits which will be available Saturday for $3 to Farm Bureau members and $5 to non-members.

Richland County Farm to Plate is a program that will occur as part of the Farmer’s Market in Shelby. A host of partners, supporters and volunteers have joined together to provide this exciting program to link the growers of our local foods with local chefs and with us, the consumer. Cooking demonstrations, featuring items that can be found at the Farmer’s Market or through local sources, will occur on six occasions this summer. Taste testing, recipes and starter kits will be available. There will be healthy activities for the kids too. This is a great opportunity to learn about and support our local food economy, and to be newly inspired to eat healthy and to eat fresh.
