I find it just abhorrent that the Ohio Farm Bureau is involved in the Puppy Mill and PM Auction debate. These are not farm animals but companion animals. The Puppy millers in Holmes need to go back to farming crops and leave puppies to people who care and who know what they are doing. I have a Puppy Mill boy bought at auction. When he came to me he had an eye infection so bad that his eyeball was ready to burst. His eye had to be sewn shut and he was pumped full of antibiotics to save his eye. He still has his eye but does not see well out of it. Then at age four he developed Hemolytic anemia and almost died twice. His life expectancy is going to be shortened. My vet says it probably is a result of living in the puppy mill and probably given too much vaccine. I guess his Puppy miller did not know how to read labels. Petland in Mentor OH is being sued from selling a Puppy mill dog to a family that spent thousands trying to save the dog only to have it die before the age of two. This will probably cause that store to close therefore eliminating an outlet for Puppy Mills. Petland in AZ is being sued by the state under the RICO act for their selling of Puppy mill dogs. The way the dogs are treated is abuse, so I guess that puts the farm bureau on the side of animal abuse. Are you also supporting the guy that was filmed abusing the cows on the Ohio dairy farm? Shame on the farm bureau. You need to get away from being around animals flag as improper

Hi Linda,

Though your comment doesn't relate to the poll question above, I can refer you to a couple links on our site that address some of your concerns.

In short, Ohio Farm Bureau condemned the acts of abuse by the farm employee. There is no excuse for the mistreatment of the animals, but there is also no reason to think that abuse is common on Ohio farms. The vast majority of Ohio's farmers take care of their livestock because its what decent people do, and because comfortable animals are productive animals.

Some links for you about the dairy abuse video:

Here is a recap of Ohio Farm Bureau's take: http://ofbf.org/news-and-events/news/781/

Here is a link to our Town Hall Ohio hour-long radio broadcast about the video and farm, with numerous guests, including the farm owner: http://ofbf.org/media-and-publications/listen/4/488/

Regarding dog breeding, the following statement appeared in a detailed question and answer interview about the recent Ohio agriculture/HSUS agreement:

"We (Ohio Farm Bureau) will engage in the dog breeding discussions; our commitment is to help find workable common ground. We also will work to protect the animal-owners rights to utilize responsible animal husbandry and business practices in areas such as genetics, nutrition, housing and marketing (including the auction system)."

You can find this statement, along with other details about the deal in the links on this page: http://ofbf.org/news-and-events/news/817/

Ohio Farm Bureau's policies are determined by a grassroots process and voted on by member delegates from across the state in our annual meeting. More details about our policy process can be found at: http://ofbf.org/policy-and-politics/policy-development/

Hopefully, these links will help provide more information and answers to the topics in your comments.

Thanks for the comment.
