What's That Wood? The Basics to Wood Identification Oct. 19

The Ohio Woodland Stewards program is starting to offer classes and workshops that will help landowners with the products side of forestry. Things like wood identification, tree, log and lumber grading will soon be offered in a variety of formats.Is a hardwood really "harder" than a softwood? What does it mean for a hardwood to be diffuse porous, ring porous, or semi-ring porous? Thinking about remodeling and deciding between several woods? This class will help you answer those questions and learn the basics of wood identification.We will explore the skills you need to identify various wood structural characteristics, including rays, tyloses, resin canals, and more. The historical benefits of these woods as well as their current uses will be discussed.Class Fee: $35, which covers educational materials and lunch OR $60 which includes educational materials, lunch and a wood ID kit. The kit has 24 different wood species.Class size is limited to the first 20 registrants. Register by Oct. 12.
