County Farm Bureaus recognized for outstanding programming

Two county Farm Bureaus from Ohio were recognized by the American Farm Bureau Federation (AFBF) for innovative new program ideas in the 2011 County Activities of Excellence program. They were among 15 local Farm Bureaus selected nationally to share their successful efforts in an exhibit at AFBF’s annual meeting.

The awards spotlight innovative programs by county Farm Bureaus in five categories: Education & Agriculture Promotion; Leadership Development; Membership Services; Policy Implementation; and Public Relations & Information.

“County Farm Bureaus from across the country compete for the best new program ideas and these winning entries represent innovation and dedication to agriculture,” said AFBF President Bob Stallman.

  • Fairfield County Farm Bureau was selected for its State of Fairfield County Agriculture program. Members of the farming, agribusiness and “Main Street” business community, along with the general public, were invited to attend a two-hour program designed to educate attendees about the importance of agriculture to the local economy. The event included a breakfast buffet and a panel presentation by local farmers and others.The county Farm Bureau partnered with the local Chamber of Commerce, Soil & Water Conservation District and Ohio State University Extension to develop the program.
  • Fulton County Farm Bureau was recognized for its carrot gleaning project. Volunteers organized a harvest of 250,000 pounds of excess carrots from a local farm for donation to 12 food banks across the state. The effort was supported by 120 volunteers and provided more than 19,000 meals for local families.
