Third-graders win trip to Ohio egg farm
Union County's North Union Elementary third-graders visited New Day Farms in Raymond, Tuesday, on an all expense paid field trip. North Union student Emma Crusey won the field trip for her classmates when she wrote one of the winning essays in Ohio Livestock Coalition’s (OLC) 'For your inFARMation' essay contest.
Upon arrival at the farm, OLC Executive Director David White recognized and thanked the essay contest winner, and then the students suited up in hairnets, booties, suits and gloves before beginning their tour of the facility.
After learning about food safety and how the farm ensures the safety and quality of their liquid egg product, the students learned about each part of the egg farm. They were able to see a chicken house and how eggs are collected, thousands of eggs moving along conveyor belts, the equipment that breaks the eggs and the tankers that transport the liquid egg product from the farm.
New Day Farms General Manager Steve Bliesner and staff answered questions from the students as they moved through the facility.
“These kids seem genuinely inquisitive,” he said.
New Day Farms has hosted other student groups, and Bliesner said he hopes to continue to share what they do at the farm with others.
A field trip to a dairy farm was also awarded to Buckeye Elementary student Naomi Miranda’s third-grade class earlier in the month. The essays reflect what students have learned about food production, from the farm to the kitchen table.
OLC’s For Your InFARMation (FYI) program, provides free materials meeting state content standards for Ohio third-grade teachers to use in their classrooms. For the essay contest students answered the question, “How do Ohio farmers make sure we have good, safe food to eat?”
