Farm bill negotiators have announced that work on the bill will not be finished before Congress goes home for the remainder of 2013. However, they are insisting a final deal is near, and floor action should take place in early January. There are currently no plans from the Senate to file an extension of the current farm bill as they are confident a deal will be reached in early January. The House has an extension ready to be filed pending final reports from the Congressional Budget Office (CBO) on the cost of the commodity title portion of the farm bill but will not file the extension if the CBO numbers fall where expected.

The current 2008 Farm Bill was extended only until September of this year, so the farm bill is expired. While some farmers are feeling the impact of the expiration, most are not and if the farm bill is completed in early January, the hope is that dairy will not be affected and farmers will have enough time to make important planting decisions.
