Ohio Farm Bureau Federation announces support for Rob Portman
COLUMBUS, OH -- The Ohio Farm Bureau Federation today announced its support for Rob Portman's U.S. Senate campaign.
"Rob Portman has been a strong friend to Ohio's farmers, and we're proud to support him as Ohio's next U.S. Senator," said Brent Porteus, president of Ohio Farm Bureau. "Rob has the right ideas to get Ohio's economy moving again, and he will continue to support smart policies to help protect and strengthen Ohio's agriculture industry. We look forward to working with Rob Portman as our next U.S. Senator."
"I am proud to have the support of the Ohio Farm Bureau Federation," Portman said. "Ohio's farmers are a tremendous asset to our state, and as Ohioís next U.S. Senator, I will continue fighting for Ohio's farmers and ag-related businesses to ensure their strength and success. Ohio's agriculture industry cannot afford Washington's job-killing policies like the cap-and-trade energy tax that will further harm our economy."
Agriculture is Ohio's No. 1 industry with 75,000 farms contributing $98 billion to the state's economy. The National Association of Manufacturers estimates that the cap-and-trade energy tax that passed in the U.S. House of Representatives would increase Ohio householdsí energy costs and could cost Ohio up to 100,000 jobs by 2035.
Ohio ranks second in the country for chicken egg production; sixth for corn production; seventh in soybean production; and ninth in hog production. Farming provides nearly 1 million Ohio jobs - or one out of every seven jobs; and every third acre planted is Ohio is exported.
As Ohio's next U.S. Senator, Portman will continue fighting to increase markets for Ohio's agricultural products and ensure that the state's exports receive fair treatment in the world market. Farmers are also businessmen, and Portman understands that ensuring the continued growth and success of agriculture in Ohio means smart regulations that allow family farms to flourish while protecting the integrity of their products. †
Friend of the FarmerDuring his 12 years in Congress, Portman consistently received the "Friend of the Farmer" award from Farm Bureau for his support of agriculture. He is a proud member of Ohio Farm Bureau. †
Conservation Tax Incentives Act of 2003Portman introduced a bill to amend the Internal Revenue Code of 1986 to exclude from gross income 50 percent of any gains from the sale to eligible entities for conservation purposes of specified land or an interest in land or water.
