Numerous provisions of the Senate Agriculture Committee’s draft farm bill follow the American Farm Bureau Federation’s core principles for “rational, acceptable farm policy,” but there is room for adjustments to improve the legislation. American Farm Bureau President Bob Stallman delivered that message to Senate Agriculture Committee leaders in a letter today following a meeting of the organization’s board of directors.

Thousands of Ohio FFA members traveled to Columbus May 3-4 for the annual State FFA Convention. Two Ohio Farm Bureau programs used this opportunity to reach out to FFA members, and the state office hosted two chapters as well. These relationships between FFA and Farm Bureau in Ohio are a continuance from the announcement that the two organizations would team up on a summer camp for youth.

The Ohio Sheep Improvement Association is once again offering the Ralph Grimshaw Memorial Scholarship to college-aged sheep producers in 2012. The $1,000 scholarship is available to young people involved sheep production and management in Ohio.

This week Ohio Farm Bureau Federation hosted staff members from Illinois, Indiana, Iowa and Michigan Farm Bureaus for the annual American Farm Bureau Federation Midwest Commodity Conference. These state Farm Bureau staff members, who have responsibilities involving agricultural commodities, came together in Columbus to share experiences and expertise.

The ODA is holding Certified Livestock Manager training June 19-20 at their offices in Reynoldsburg. Part of the training will address nutrient management and water quality issues currently under consideration by a statewide working group that is jointly led by ODA, Ohio EPA and ODNR.

Union County's North Union Elementary third graders visited New Day Farms in Raymond, Tuesday, on an all expense paid field trip. North Union student Emma Crusey won the field trip for her classmates when she wrote one of the winning essays in Ohio Livestock Coalition’s essay contest.
