    Young people ages 18 to 35 and their immediate families are invited to share and explore their interests in food production and technology during Ohio Farm Bureau Federation’s (OFBF) new Summer Reach Out series.

    The events provide voluteer- and schedule-friendly opportunities for young people to come together for a learning experience with their family and others who share their interests.

    6/16 - 6/20 - Higher Ground OFBF Summer Youth Leadership Conference (GoTo...)
    Teen students ages 14 to 18 are invited to join together for an exciting, life-changing experience in a unique summer leadership program providing opportunities to build quality leadership, teamwork and communication skills in noncompetetive ways.

    Higher Ground allows youths to experience a hands-on mock legistlature and develop business skills to help them to lead. The conference is sponsored by Ohio Farm Bureau, a family organization serving Ohio's farmers, consumers and economy.

    6/19 - Establishing a New Bramble Planting (GoTo...)
    Brambles are an ideal crop for both small and large farms. The demand for fresh blackberries and raspberries continues to increase, so finding a market for your product shouldn’t be a problem.

    Properly establishing and maintaining your plants are critical to the long-term success of the crop and return on your investment.

    From proper site and variety selection to successfully winterizing your plants, you’ll come away with the knowledge you need to begin your bramble production.

    Join OSU Small Fruit Crop Specialist Dr. Maurus Brown as he explains:

    6/25 - OPGMA Summer Tour & Field Day (GoTo...)
    This year's Ohio Produce Growers & Marketers Association (OPGMA) Summer Tour & Field Day, Wednesday, June 25, will focus on research being done at OARDC in Wooster. This half-day event will provide abundant networking opportunities with attendees and industry experts.

    The event begins at 8 a.m. at the Fisher Auditorium where leading allied vendors will be on hand to demonstrate their newest equipment, packaging, chemicals, seeds, and services. In addition, there will be MarketMaker demonstrations and a diagnostic clinic by The Ohio State University vegetable and fruit disease, insect, and weed management specialists. They will help you diagnose plant diseases and identify insect and weed pests, so bring your samples and questions!

    Tour Stop Details

    Participants will visit three of OARDC's campus farms. Hort 1 High Tunnels: This will focus on tomato production. Dr. Matt Kleinhenz will speak on Tomato Grafting: Its Potential and Status, explaining the basics of grafting and how the increasingly popular technique could benefit tomato producers. In the second presentation, Dr. Sally Miller will discuss organic disease management of tomatoes produced in high tunnels. She will offer ways to control diseases such as botrytis, leaf mold, and white mold using compost amendments, biofumigants, and foliar-applied products. Snyder Farm Orchard: Fruit production will be the focus, with a presentation on beekeeping and a chance to evaluate an ongoing apple fungicide trial. Dr. Jim Tew will discuss the challenges facing Ohio's beekeepers and information about the need for more bee colonies in Ohio. Afterward, Dr. Mike Ellis will explain the experimental use of dormant applications of the phosphite fungicide AGRI-FOS and the bark-penetrating adjuvant Pentra Bark for controlling early season apple scab without the use of additional fungicides. Snyder Farm High Tunnels: Features a presentation on Polyculture System for Use by the Small Urban Farmer. Joe Kovach will show the optimal layout in terms of economics, pest density, and efficiency of a polyculture system for small urban farmers of perennial fruit crops such as apples, peaches, blueberries, raspberries, and strawberries as well as annual plantings of tomatoes, beans, soybeans, and other crops. Following the tour at OARDC, lunch and a brief OPGMA session will be held. Attendees may then drive to and tour Secrest Arboretum.

    6/25 - 6/27 - Quest OFBF Summer Youth Leadership Conference (GoTo...)
    Teen students ages 11 to 13 are invited to join together for an exciting, life-changing experience in a unique summer leadership program providing opportunities to build quality leadership, teamwork and communication skills in noncompetetive ways.

    Quest provides focus on self-esteem, relational and communication skills. The conference is sponsored by Ohio Farm Bureau, a family organization serving Ohio's farmers, consumers and economy.

    7/12 - Ohio Sheep Day (GoTo...)
    Sheep owners and anyone interested in forage management is invited to Ohio Sheep Day, to be held July 12 at the Athens County farm of Curt and Wendy Cline, 3933 Factory Road, Albany.

    The event will provide ideas about sheep nutrition, sheep management systems as well as many other areas of sheep production.

    7/20 - 7/25 - The Edge OFBF Summer Youth Leadership Conference (GoTo...)
    Teen students ages 15 and older are invited to join together for an exciting, life-changing experience in a unique summer leadership program providing opportunities to build quality leadership, teamwork and communication skills in noncompetetive ways.

    The Edge provides focused teambuilding and communication skills that help youths to serve as effective leaders in high school while preparing them for success in college and life. The conference is sponsored by Ohio Farm Bureau, a family organization serving Ohio's farmers, consumers and economy.

    September 2008 - Farm Safety Day Camps (GoTo...)
    Each year across the United States, more than 100 children die and approximately 24,000 experience a serious injury associated with farming. During the past decade, 36 Ohio youth died in an agricultural-related incident—statistics Ohio State University Extension (OSUE) Agricultural Safety and Health Program are trying to change.

    What: In the past 11 years, more than 15,000 youth have participated in an Ohio farm safety day camp. These camps are a collaborative sponsorship among OSUE, Ohio Farm Bureau, Our Ohio, Ohio 4-H Foundation and The Nationwide Foundation. Farm Safety Round-Ups offer communities valuable lessons about farm dangers through educational sessions that focus on rural safety.
