Book Nominations Being Accepted

Ohio Farm Bureau is accepting nominations for the 2002 Outstanding Children's Literature Award. Nominations are due Dec. 15. The selection committee is comprised of members of the OFBF board of trustees, who will make their choice in February, in time for county Farm Bureaus to order the book and present them during National Agriculture Week in March. The award originated in 1989, and 13 books have been recognized for their agricultural theme and accuracy in portraying agriculture.

If you would like to nominate a book for consideration, send the title and author's name to the OFBF Promotion and Education department by Dec. 15. Nominated books must have been published in the United States in the preceding five years.

Previous winning books are available for order from county Farm Bureau offices, and are appropriate for Christmas and birthday gifts, as well as classroom and library donations. 2001 Winner
Hooray for Dairy Farming, by Bobbie Kalman, is the 2001 winner of the OFBF Outstanding Children's Literature Award. The book offers a look at the day-to-day world of a modern dairy farm and shows how milk is produced, processed and distributed. Full-color photographs and text explain the history of dairy farming, how farmers keep cows healthy, what cows eat and how they make milk, the machinery used to milk cows, how milk is pasteurized, how dairy products such as cheese are manufactured, the three different kinds of dairy barns and a recipe for a banana milkshake. Kalman wrote an entire series, "Hooray for Farming," of which the dairy book is a part.

"Many children think that food magically appears at their supermarket and have no idea how hard farmers work to feed the country," Kalman said. "I hope I have successfully expressed that information and feeling of gratitude in my book.
