All About Bugs

The Carroll County Farm Bureau, along with Carroll County Extension, used crafts at the annual Country Living Field Day held in Augusta in late September to teach children about the different types of insects in the region and what purpose they serve.

Volunteers from Farm Bureau staffed a tent during the day-long event and helped more than 500 children create crafts to take home. The children learned about beetles, dragonflies, bees and birds.

"We set up different stations in the tent where children could sit and learn about the types of insects in the environment while creating a fun craft," Vickie Caldwell, Carroll County Farm Bureau member said. "There was also a terrarium and live chickens and chicks for the children to learn about."

At one station the children rolled pinecones in peanut butter and birdseed to create a bird feeder. At another the children cut out patterns on paper plates and colored them to create beetles. Children were also able to create dragonflies from miniature clothespins and other materials.

Caldwell said one of the most popular displays showed how bees pollinate flowers and create honey.

Country Living Field Day is held each September in Carroll County for farmers to find new and interesting alternatives to add income to their farms. The acres of displays feature everything from alpacas and llamas to herbs and plants. There also are educational seminars and safety skits throughout the day. More than 5,000 visitors crossed through the gate at this year’s event.
