River Valley Region - Delaware County Farm Bureau![]() Bringing Folks Together More and more people are moving from the city to the country to find a quieter, more private place to live. However, many urbanites do not understand or are unaware of the day-to-day activities on the farm. When people move from the city to rural areas, they may be surprised by many of the sights, sounds and smells of farming. To make some of their new neighbors feel comfortable the Delaware County Wagon Tongues Advisory Council invited them to a community cookout this past summer. It was held at Gary and Carol Davis farm. Approximately 85 people attended and were treated to a picnic feast prepared by the advisory council. Council members talked to the group about growing corn and that everyday products such as lipstick are made from corn by-products, hydroponic vegetables, and information on general farming and crops. Angela Banbury, OFBF organization director for Delaware and Franklin counties, also told the group about the benefits of being a Farm Bureau member. Those who attended were able to take hydroponic vegetables home and registered to win an hour ride in a combine during harvest season. Banbury said many of those who attended asked questions and seemed interested in their new farm neighbors. During registration, participants were asked to sign in, list their occupations and wear nametags with their addresses on them. "It was amazing to see the many different occupations of the neighborhood. There were everything from doctors and lawyers to Ohio State University employees," Banbury said. "Many of the people were neighbors and didnt even realize it. It was a great way to bring them all together." | |
