Self-Help Electric: Frequently Asked Questions

FirstEnergy Solutions answered questions about savings opportunities for residential customers of Toledo Edison, Ohio Edison and The Illuminating Company through the OFBF Self-Help Electric Program:

Q. As a "new" consumer who has not participated in electric choice, how can I estimate my savings? I have a "Cost to Compare" figure on my utility bill.

A. In order to estimate potential savings through Farm Bureau participation:

  1. Locate your cost to compare figure at the top of page two of your most current electric bill. Multiply the figure by .96 (96 percent). The resulting number is FirstEnergy Solutions (FES) estimated price per kilowatt-hour.
  2. Subtract the FES estimated price from the price to compare in order to determine your estimated savings per kilowatt-hour.
  3. Multiply your estimated savings per-kilowatt hour by the kWh usage on that month's bill. This shows your estimated savings for that month.
  4. Multiply your monthly figure by 12, or take a look at the kWh usage on your last 12 utility bills, and determine your estimated annual savings.

Q. I already participate in Electric Choice, but not with Farm Bureau. I don't understand what a generation shopping credit is.

A. When you choose an alternative electric supplier, your electric utility will provide you with a "generation shopping credit," which is available on your electric bill or by calling 800-225-0444. The generation shopping credit – which varies each month – represents the amount credited to you for choosing an alternative electric supplier.

Q. How much will I save on electric supply with FirstEnergy Solutions?

A. As an OFBF member, the price you pay for electric supply will be 4 percent lower than your generation shopping credit.

Q. How can I estimate what I’ll pay for electric supply with this percentage discount?

A. To estimate what your savings will be with FirstEnergy Solutions, locate your generation shopping credit on your electric bill. As an OFBF member, multiply your generation shopping credit by .96 (96 percent). Take that result and subtract it from the generation shopping credit that appears on your bill to estimate your monthly savings.
