Pioneer Region - Washington County Farm BureauCome Spend "A Day in the Country" Come explore opportunities from growing berries to raising fish and maybe starting your own business. Watch old-time crafts being made, stroll through the farmers market displays and get fresh cut flowers from local farmers. Take your kids to get a picture with their milk mustache on and to play old time games with 4-H club members from the Barlow area. Washington County Farm Bureau along with Ohio State University Extension and other agriculture groups will sponsor "A Day in the Country" June 8 at the Barlow Fairgrounds in Barlow from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. There will be five main areas for people to learn about things in the country: agriculture, natural resources, horticulture and gardening, small business and tourism, and health/nutrition and heritage skills. The agriculture area will include speakers teaching families how to grow berries, start a greenhouse and get ideas of what to grow on their 20 acres and more. Throughout the day, experts from Ohio State University and local farmers will share their knowledge during 30-minute sessions and at display areas. The natural resources area will include demonstrations all day. There also will be programs every 30-minutes on things landowners can do to improve their property. The horticulture and gardening area will include several mini-seminars taught by the OSU Extension Master Gardeners. Everything from what to plant in that problem spot in the yard to what invasive plants to avoid will be shared with participants. Master Gardeners will give details on fish and plants for the backyard water garden and teach participants how to create a blooming chart for their own garden at home. The small business and tourism section will feature many new small businesses in the area and give them an opportunity to show participants what they do. The Marietta College Small Business Development Center will teach workshops throughout the day on how to start your own business. Health/nutrition and heritage skills will demonstrate how many old time crafts are made by hand and offer gifts for sale. Demonstrations will include basket making, quilting, candle making and more.
