The Readers WriteHi from Knox County: The Buckeye Farm News was a topic of discussion at our last farm council meeting (The Milford Haymakers). We feel the communication has lost something by going to the present format. We also feel that Our Ohio doesn't serve as a backup for the information the "News" misses. We suggest that we would like to see in the "Faces" column, pictures of county presidents, noting what is being done in their county and also some of the important issues they send forward for state and federal consideration. (Some of these issues might make really good "getting down to brass tacks" discussion sheets.) Thanks for the opportunity of expressing our feelings. Dodie Melvin Centerburg, OH Editor’s Response: Thanks for your note about the content of Buckeye Farm News. Your ideas about focusing on local people and events are good ones. We are attempting to accomplish that with our page 7 materials. The "in the field" page is devoted to county activities and features a volunteer each issue. If your county has something in particular that we should be covering, please just drop us a note and we'll be glad to consider it for the publication. We also carry some advisory council material on page 4, but I admit it has been somewhat limited. As for the "Faces" column, we believe there's value in using that particular section to familiarize members with public figures who have an influence on Farm Bureau activities. I hope you'll feel our other efforts to feature county leaders and programs will get that job done as well. Regarding Our Ohio: We recognize that it is very limited in specific Farm Bureau news. That's intentional. Our goal with the magazine is to produce something our nonfarming members will find value in. If we can get them to read the articles we have a chance to slip in some messages that our active members have asked us to promote. It's our opportunity to do some good PR for agriculture. I'd be interested in how your council thinks we're doing in that regard. | |
