Warren Co. Discusses Labor Concerns

So many Farm Bureau members rely on migrant labor this time of year, that Warren County Farm Bureau decided to bring answers to its members in the form of an information meeting. On Feb. 27 Warren County Farm Bureau, together with Warren County One Stop and Warren County Extension, hosted a meeting focusing on labor concerns.

Migrant labor and child labor laws can be tricky to understand, and the needs of employers are often overlooked. The meeting was designed to give straightforward facts about the use of child or migrant labor for farm or agricultural related tasks.

Barbara Barrett of the U.S. Department of Labor discussed child labor laws and guidelines for employers. John Wargowsky, executive director of Mid American Ag and Hort Services, discussed migrant labor and the rules, regulations and pending legislation facing employers who use contract labor.

CUTLINE: The following people served as the meeting committee (l to r) Bud and Belva Barnthouse; Roger Rhude; Peggy Clark; Greg Meyers, county Extension agent; Mary Spaeth, Jon Branstrator, Amy Mole, OFBF organization director for Hamilton, Montgomery and Warren counties; and Shirley Saddler.
