10 tips for saving money on your health care
We all want to save money on things we buy. So we watch for sales, comparison shop and even clip coupons to save on inexpensive items. But what about one of our most costly expenses – health care? While no one wants to cut corners on getting quality care, there are many ways to save substantial dollars – mainly by keeping some basic concepts in mind. The tips below come from health care professionals at Ohio Farm Bureau's member health insurance provider, Nationwide Health Plans. Following these common-sense suggestions can help you manage your health care and the money you spend on this important part of your budget. You and Your Doctor - Develop a comfortable working relationship with a primary care physician.
- Follow your doctor’s orders concerning medications, rest and other good-health instructions.
- Ask your primary care physician for referrals when you need to see a specialist.
Medicine and Services - Choose generic drugs instead of name brands – and ask your doctor about over-the-counter remedies that don’t require a prescription.
- Ask questions about the medical services you receive, and make sure you understand the procedures and recovery plans.
- Use urgent care centers instead of emergency rooms for injuries and illnesses that are not life threatening.
- Carefully review all of your medical bills and Explanations of Benefits (EOBs) you receive. Check them for accuracy, and dispute any errors.
Knowledge and Lifestyle - Know and understand your medications. Become more familiar with their intended effects and how they interact with other medications. Be sure to know your prescribed dosage and follow it exactly.
- Take time to read your benefit plan and understand your policy so you’ll be better informed about coverages. Ask your agent about policy points you don't understand.
- Stay in shape – exercise regularly, eat a balanced diet and watch your weight.
