River Valley Region - Darke County Farm Bureau

Farm Bureau Supports Charities

Darke County Farm Bureau initiated the "7 Acres for Hunger" project in 2000 to display to the public what is involved in raising a crop and educate the public on farm safety. The project was done in cooperation with Dayton TV Channel 7, Castine Church, Harvestland Co-op of Eldorado, Dupont and Savona Ag Center. Soybeans were planted in 2000 and sweet corn in 2001 on church-owned land. Proceeds from harvests were donated to charity.

Darke County Farm Bureau donates the sign, provides the resource personnel and schedules the events. Newscenter 7 has provided periodic media coverage of the progress of the crop. Harvest Land Co-op Eldorado and Savona Ag Centers provided the seed, fertilizer, application and the resource personnel for this portion of the project. Dupont Crop Protection provided crop chemicals.

To provide crop progress, Paul Morrison, Darke County Farm Bureau member and project coordinator, gave frequent updates to the public through articles in the newspapers.

Harvest profits reached $2,000.69 in 2000 and $1,621.69 in 2001, and were divided between Darke County FISH and the Castine Church food pantry.

The Castine Church is located at 624 U.S. Route 127 just north of Castine and south of Greenville.
