Dr. Philip Engler

Chief, Consumer Analytical Laboratory

Dr. Philip Engler was appointed chief of the Consumer Analytical Laboratory at the Ohio Department of Agriculture in July 2001. The division serves as the state’s primary food safety laboratory, performing more than 100,000 tests on 18,700 samples annually to assure a safe and wholesome food supply.

Before joining ODA, Engler served for 15 years in a variety of leadership roles at the corporate analytical laboratory at BP Research. His previous experience also includes two years as manager of analytical services for the packaging business of James River Corporation and four years as a group coordinator in the analytical services and technology section of Ashland Specialty Chemical Company.

Engler earned a bachelor of science degree from Cornell University. He earned master of science and doctorate degrees from Northwestern University in materials science and engineering.
