Youth Hone Leadership Skills

Ohio Farm Bureau, in cooperation with area supervisors and organization directors, hosted summer leadership development conferences at Bluffton College and Wilmington College. Youth ages 13 and up were invited to learn more about Farm Bureau, build their leadership skills, confidence and prepare for life after high school.

Much of the conferences were devoted to Farm Bureau in Action, which is a simulation of advisory councils, Farm Bureau boards, policy development and the House of Representatives. Youth councils submit proposed laws, which work their way through the process to the House floor where they are debated and put up for a vote.

In cooperation with Nationwide, youth learned about the dangers of drunken driving. Other sessions included choral music, dancing, cooperative organization, manners and college selection. Elective sessions included livestock judging, digital photography and presentations, Web site development and problem solving skills.

A talent show was held, as were the "Spotlight on Safety" skits in which teens educate each other about vital safety issues.

"These conferences teach learning skills, critical thinking, team work, self-confidence and safety, but it’s wrapped up in a great social environment, and the teens love it," said Darrell Rubel, OFBF director of young leader programs. "They go away from the conference with a hundred new friends and great experiences to share with those back home."

The State Leadership Conference, for older youths, is being held July 21 to 26 at Otterbein College in Westerville
