Buckeye Region - Huron County Farm Bureau

Sign Promotes Safety

Huron County Farm Bureau board members are looking out for their fellow farmers. Year after year, the county board has placed advertisements in the local paper warning motorists about slow-moving vehicles during planting and harvesting seasons. This year, they decided to take it one step further and create 50 road signs to place throughout the county.

The signs tell motorists to be alert and watch for slow-moving vehicles. To reach the most people, they are put on well-traveled roads. The signs are not up year-round. They are only in place during the times of the most slow-moving vehicle traffic – spring, mid-summer and early fall. The signs are bright yellow, double sided and 2-by-3 feet.

"We thought by only having them up during the most farm machinery traffic, we would be more likely to get and keep people’s attention. This way, it will always be something new and visible, rather than them getting used to it being there and ignoring it," said Connie Ward, OFBF organization director for Erie, Huron and Lorain counties.

The signs are definitely getting noticed. Another county Farm Bureau saw the signs and ordered 50 signs from Huron County Farm Bureau.

"We’re raising awareness and keeping our farmers safe," Ward said. "Safety is very important to us."
