Conference focuses on future of biofuels

Get the latest information about the production and use of biofuels at the Ohio/Michigan Biofuels Conference on Dec. 9 in Perrysburg in northwest Ohio. Ohio Farm Bureau is a co-sponsor of the conference.

Biofuels encompass any fuel manufactured from biomass resources like corn for ethanol or soybeans for soydiesel. Discussion will focus on the role of agriculture, transportation, government and related industries that support the biofuels industry in Ohio and Michigan.

The conference, Issues Policies and Opportunities in Ohio & Michigan, is sponsored by Ohio Farm Bureau, Ohio Corn Growers, Ohio Soybean Association, Ohio State University Extension, Michigan Corn Growers, Michigan Soybean Growers and Michigan State University Extension. The conference is being coordinated by BBI International, which specializes in planning and facilitating meetings specific to the bioenergy industry.

According to promotional information about the conference, discussion topics will be beneficial for representatives from agriculture, transportation (including fleet managers), environmental organizations, regulatory and government agencies and researchers.

Those discussion topics include:

  • Regulatory issues for biofuels use in fleets
  • Alternative feedstocks for ethanol production
  • Feedstocks for biodiesel production
  • Impact of policy decisions on Ohio and Michigan agriculture, transportation and energy industries
  • Short- and long-term look at energy supplies
  • Potential for biofuels production in Ohio and Michigan
  • Potential markets for biofuels in the region and around the country.

A preliminary welcome reception is scheduled for the evening of Dec. 8 at the conference location, the Holiday Inn French Quarter in Perrysburg. Conference opening remarks begin at 9 a.m. Dec. 9. Invited speakers include Mike Wagner of Ohio Corn Growers; Rep. Marcy Kaptur, D-Toledo; Bob Dinneen, president of the Renewable Fuels Association; and Joe Jobe, executive director of National Biodiesel Board.
