Financial assistance is needed now for farmers and ranchers who have suffered losses due to weather disasters, according to the American Farm Bureau Federation. Without emergency disaster assistance, many farms, ranches and rural businesses face economic ruin, the group said.

"We urge Congress to approve emergency disaster assistance for crop and livestock producers who had financial losses in 2001 and 2002 because of natural disasters," said AFBF President Bob Stallman. "Such assistance would be consistent with the response by our government to natural disasters in the past, including hurricanes, floods and droughts."

Ohio farmers who believe disaster assistance should be passed by Congress are encouraged to contact their lawmakers in Washington.
