Farm Bureau youth help build playground

Summit County Farm Bureau Youth, along with some siblings and parents, were among approximately 400 volunteers who participated in a week-long blitz build of a 30,000 square foot recreational playground in the city of Green. The Farm Bureau youth group also helped raise funds for the $100,000 Heritage Park.

The playground is designed for all ages and incorporates Green heritage and Ohio history. A portion of the complex is shaped like a barn and silo. The Ohio bicentennial seal was painted on the red roof of the barn. Another part of the complex features a replica of a post office that once stood in Green. The porch of the post office also doubles as a theater and there is bleacher seating in front of the stage. There is also a mural of a barn scene in one of the units. In the adjacent Tiny-Tot area, there is a display of what astronaut John Glenn might have seen while orbiting the earth.

"Our youth group got involved as a way to say ‘Thank You’ to the community for allowing us to use the Green Community Building each month for our meetings, and as a way to give back to the community as many of our kids are getting older. It was also a whole lot of fun," said Cherri Staley, youth group adviser. Other advisers are John Staley, and Dan and Felicia Cain.

The park is open to anyone, and the project at Boettler Recreational Park was sponsored by the city of Green, the Green Parks and Recreational Division and the Green Heritage Foundation.

CAPTION: Admiring their completed handiwork at the new creative playground in Green are Summit County Farm Bureau Youth (l to r) Bryan Cain, Bryn Mastin, Emily Mastin and Shelly Staley.
