Agriculture makes learning fun

The Ohio Farm Bureau Federation and the Ohio Soybean Council recently sponsored a popular program for more than 400 fourth-grade students in Franklin County. Lessons in Economics and Science, a field trip experience conducted over nine days, was held at the Agricultural Administration Building at Ohio State University in Columbus.

Designed to meet fourth-grade Proficiency Test standards, the program opens with the OFBF video, THIS is Ohio Agriculture and then features five activity stations where students participate in hands on science and economic experiments and discussions. OFBF Promotion and Education Specialist Judy Roush said teachers made their requests to reserve the field trip for their students quickly: the available dates filled in one day, which Roush said indicates recognition, among the educators who applied, of the excellence and relevance of the program.

Lessons in Economics and Science is coordinated by the Ohio Soybean Council’s educational consultants who trained nearly 35 Ohio State student volunteers to conduct the activities. "This is truly a unique program with a goal of educating students about agriculture," Roush said.

Cutline: Deangelo and Sylvester (last names are coming) from East Linden Elementary School in Columbus took part in the "Dashing Pepper" during their field trip to Ohio State University for Lessons in Economics and Science. "Dashing Pepper" is one test in a series of five experiments, which conclude by showing that soy lecithin, found in Nesquick, helps the product dissolve more quickly.
