Fire code regulations apply to fuel tanksAbove ground fuel storage tanks are common on farms across Ohio. But what may not be so common is knowledge of state fire code regulations that apply to those tanks. According to Larry Gearhardt, OFBF director of local affairs, the regulations are "Fairly new, fairly stringent, and they need to be complied with." The rules cover tank construction, set-backs, fencing around tanks, dispenser locations and many other such topics. Because of their comprehensive nature, it’s likely that many above ground storage systems on farms around Ohio don’t meet all the rules. Should your tanks fail to pass inspection, the law provides for fines. Gearhardt doesn’t foresee a flood of fire marshal visits to Ohio farms, but he points out that farmers should want to comply with the regulations as a matter of safety. Permits are required to remove old tanks and install new ones. To apply for the permit and learn more about the regulations, Gearhardt suggests starting with your local fire department. "Many of the fuel tank requirements are enforced by local fire departments and so they’re the first place to start. If they don’t offer this service, you can contact the state fire marshal’s office. The state fire marshal’s phone number is 614-728-5460, or you can link to the Web site via OFBF’s home page. | |
