Events planned for Ag Week

National Agriculture Day is March 21, and several county Farm Bureaus are planning activities during National Agriculture Week, March 16 to 22. County Farm Bureaus are joining producers, agricultural associations, corporations, universities, government agencies and countless others across America to recognize the contributions of agriculture.

National Agriculture Day focuses on educating Americans about the industry, so they may also acknowledge and consider career opportunities in the agriculture, food and fiber industry. National Agriculture Day is in its 30th year.

Organization directors were given the opportunity to list their counties' events. Following are the events submitted to Buckeye Farm News for publication:

Events surrounding National Agriculture Week:

  • Erie and Lorain: Distributing placemats to local restaurants
  • Erie: Putting displays in libraries; agriculture trivia contest in one local school
  • Hamilton, Montgomery and Warren: Donating the new OFBF coloring books to all of the second graders in one school district per county. Also, donating one tape to each school of the video "10 Things Kids Want to Know About Farming." Have submitted articles to community newspapers.
  • Wyandot: Creating an agriculture theme library display that will be available in March. Also, story hour at the library will use Farm Bureau coloring books and crayons.
  • Defiance: Sponsoring a second grade coloring contest.
  • Paulding: Donating books to elementary school libraries and hosting story time.
  • Putnam: Sponsoring first grade coloring contest.
  • Van Wert: Providing second grade Ag in the Classroom presentations; donating books to the elementary and county libraries.

March 14

  • Fayette: Ag Breakfast, 7:30 a.m. at the Fayette County Extension office.

March 16

  • Logan: Rollerskating party, 4:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Indian Lake Rollarena

March 18

  • Van Wert: Farmers' Share Breakfast
  • Fulton: Farmers' Share Lunch

March 19

  • Wood: Tour of the new Manders' Dairy Farm near Weston. If you would like to attend, contact the Wood County Farm Bureau office at 419-833-8015.
  • Henry: Farmers' Share Lunch
  • Clinton: Ag Breakfast 7:15 a.m. at the Presbyterian Church in Wilmington.

March 20

  • Shelby: Teaming with the Shelby County Soil and Water Conservation District to gather donations from local pork and dairy producers to hand-out cheese and ham to customers at the Sidney Kroger. The effort also includes local FFA chapters that will distribute educational materials at the in-store display.
  • Ottawa: Ag Breakfast

March 21

  • Hamilton: Working with Channel 12 in Cincinnati to set up "Farm on the Square," a petting zoo on Fountain Square in downtown Cincinnati. Channel 12 will host a variety of fast facts through out the broadcast.
  • Erie and Huron: Will present a basket of agriculture items to the baby born on Ag Day.

March 22

  • Delaware: Farmers' Share Breakfast, 8 to 11 a.m., Dempsey Middle School in Delaware.

March 23

  • Cuyahoga: Hosting a Farm Bureau Appreciation Day at the Cleveland Metroparks Zoo and Rain Forest from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
