River Valley Region - Delaware County Farm Bureau

Huge turnout for Farmers’ Share Breakfast

The Delaware County Farm Bureau had its most successful attendance for its annual farmers’ share breakfast. More than 1,200 people came out to Dempsey Middle School March 22 for a breakfast of pancakes, whole hog sausage, eggs, orange juice, milk and coffee for just 50 cents.

The purpose of the event was to let the public know, on average, what percent of breakfast costs goes back to the farmer. For a $6 or $7 breakfast the farmer only makes about 50 cents.

Commodity groups gave away brochures and handouts. For the children, there was a milk can toss, a milk-a-cow and the Farm Bureau 500 pedal cart race.

Prior to the event, Delaware County Farm Bureau advertised in the Delaware Gazette and This Week. A flyer about the event was sent home with students in Delaware City, Big Walnut and Buckeye Valley School Districts. Farm Bureau members also posted and distributed flyers at various places of business.

Patrons of the breakfast were given a pamphlet that had National Ag Day information, food dollar, sponsors and agriculture facts.

More than 65 Delaware County Farm Bureau members and youth volunteered for the event. "What a great event to have in the community to help increase the awareness to the public of how fortunate we are in America to have such a safe, affordable, wholesome and abundant food supply. I can't say enough of how impressed I was with the turnout of Farm Bureau volunteers and the support of sponsors in the community in order to make this a very successful Farmers’ Share Breakfast," said Angela Banbury, organization director for Delaware and Franklin counties.
