Your ticket to paradise

Now is the time to consider participation in this year's young farmer contests. All state winners will receive an expense-paid trip to the AFBF annual meeting in Honolulu, Jan 11 to 13, 2004. The contests are open to young farmers ages 35 or younger.

Discussion Meet

The Discussion Meet contest is designed to simulate a committee meeting where discussion and active participation are expected from each participant. This competition is evaluated on an exchange of ideas and information on a predetermined topic. The judges are looking for the contestant that offers constructive criticism, cooperation and communication while analyzing agricultural problems and developing solutions.

OFBF's semifinal competition is held during Leadership Conference, Aug. 15. The state winner receives $1,000 from Nationwide Insurance, $500 from Dodge Trucks, a chime clock and will represent Ohio at the national competition at the AFBF annual meeting.

Contact your county office for registration materials. Deadline to register is July 18.

Excellence in Agriculture

This program is designed as an opportunity to recognize young farmers who actively contribute to agriculture and are growing through their involvement in Farm Bureau and agriculture. Participants will be judged on their involvement in agriculture, leadership ability, involvement and participation in Farm Bureau and other organizations (i.e., civic, service and community). The state winner will compete for the national title at the AFBF annual meeting.

The state winner receives a $1,000 technology package from Ohio Farm Bureau, $500 from Dodge Trucks and a chime clock. Applications and deadline information are available at your county office.

Outstanding Young Farmer/Young Farm Couple

The awards are designed to recognize young farmers for achievement in the business of farming and leadership in the agricultural community. County Farm Bureaus will host their local contests this summer. Those winners are eligible to compete in the state contest, as are winners from previous years. The contest culminates in one couple and one single being selected as regional winners who compete for the state titles.

The winner with the highest overall score will represent Ohio at the AFBF Young Farmer and Rancher Achievement Contest.

State winners receive $500 from Dodge Trucks, a one-year subscription to FarmDayta Marketing Service provided by Farm Credit Services of Mid-America and a chime clock.

All applications are due to Ohio Farm Bureau by Oct. 10. Complete contest information is available at your county Farm Bureau office.
