Two receive $500 Darwin Bryan scholarships

Two $500 scholarships were awarded by the Darwin Bryan Scholarship fund to Ryan Stobbs of Westerville and Lindsey Ulrey of Marengo.

Stobbs, son of Richard and JoAnn Stobbs of Franklin County, is a freshman at University of Cincinnati majoring in mechanical engineering. He was active in Farm Bureau youth activities on the local, regional and statewide level. He has attended several regional camps and served on the State Youth Committee from 2000 to 2002.

In his scholarship application narrative, Stobbs wrote: "I feel I owe a lot to the Farm Bureau. Thanks for the experiences I had as youth council member and on the State Youth Committee; I have really grown as a person. I’m not sure who I would be today if it weren’t for those experiences, and I hope to one day do the same for youth in the future."

Ulrey, daughter of Larry and Sheri Ulrey of Morrow County, is a sophomore at Ohio State University in Columbus where she majors in animal science. She also has been active in local, regional and statewide Farm Bureau youth events. She was chair of the State Youth Committee from 2001 to 2003. She represented Ohio at the National Safety Congress in Atlanta this year.

In her scholarship application narrative, Ulrey wrote: "Youth today are the foundation upon which tomorrow will be built. I have truly enjoyed my activities in the youth program and look forward to putting my leadership skills to work."

Darrell Rubel, OFBF director of youth and safety programs, said there were 29 applications from children of Ohio Farm Bureau members for this year’s Darwin Bryan Scholarships.

"It’s unfortunate we couldn’t offer more scholarships this year. There were many students deserving of scholarships. The committee had a difficult time choosing just two winners," he said.

The scholarship honors Darwin Bryan, long-time youth program coordinator for the Ohio Farm Bureau Federation.
