Commercial Drivers License waiver being examined

A special provision in the Ohio Revised Code relating to Commercial Drivers License exemptions is coming under scrutiny from the United States Department of Transportation.

According to Larry Gearhardt, Ohio Farm Bureau director of local affairs, the special provision allows someone working in a farm-related industry or business to receive a six-month waiver from Commercial Drivers License requirements. It also allows the time period of the waiver to float. Gearhardt said the U.S. Department of Transportation is putting pressure on the Ohio Department of Public Safety to lock in the six-month period because of concerns about homeland security.

"Ohio Farm Bureau has had input regarding when the six-month period should be," he said. "We just want our members to know that there is interest in locking in the six-month waiver period."

Farmers are not required to obtain a Commercial Drivers License as long as they are hauling products of the farm, to or from the farm, no more than 150 miles away.
