Nationwide’s Barnes announces retirement

Galen R. Barnes, president and chief operating officer of Nationwide Insurance, has announced his retirement effective December 2003. He began his Nationwide career in 1975 as an assistant actuary. He is a fellow of the Casualty Actuarial Society and a member of the American Academy of Actuaries. His community involvement includes membership on the boards of the National Urban League, Franklin County United Way, Arthur G. James Cancer Hospital and Ohio Dominican University. He holds a bachelor’s of science degree in mathematics from Indiana University.

An excerpt from a note Barnes sent to Nationwide employees: "As I reflect upon the past 28 years as a Nationwider and four years as Nationwide Insurance president, I am astounded by what has been achieved both in Nationwide and enterprise-wide. I prepare to transition, knowing that we have great leadership – our Board of Directors, CEO, senior leadership team, associates and agents, and with the knowledge that we are a quality company that will become even greater in the future. I am happy and proud that I have been able to play a part in our success."
