Miller wins Discussion Meet Mandy Miller of Dover was named the winner in the 2003 Discussion Meet hosted by the Ohio Farm Bureau Federation (OFBF). The Discussion Meet is a competition that chooses a winner based on subject knowledge, problem solving abilities, and personal and small group communication skills. During the finals, Miller and the other contestants discussed the topic "In what ways can agriculture’s newest advancements be made more attractive to the consumer?" Miller said she and her fellow contestants agreed that "Farmers need to become a trusted source for the public. We want them to come to us (farmers) first instead of to a group who maybe doesn’t share our ideas." She will represent Ohio in the national Discussion Meet during the American Farm Bureau Federation (AFBF) annual meeting in Honolulu in January. She receives an expense-paid trip to the AFBF meeting, $1,000 from Nationwide Insurance and $500 from Dodge and a chime clock sponsored by OFBF. Miller is a member of the Tuscarawas County Farm Bureau, has served as promotion and education chairperson and worked on various other committees. She is involved with the family’s small grains, hay and dairy farm. She is a graduate of Kent State University and currently attends law school. Other contestants were John Buck of Marion County, Isaac Rose of Jackson County and Molly Barnes of Delaware County. | |
