Large livestock, air quality on agenda for coalition meetingAir quality, the perception of concentrated animal feeding operations and terrorism in agriculture will be topics addressed at the Ohio Livestock Coalition (OLC) 2004 annual meeting and industry symposium, Feb. 24 at Der Dutchman in Plain City. Discussing "Preliminary Results and Analysis of Air Quality Monitoring of Large Livestock Farms in Ohio" will be Lingying Zhao, assistant professor of animal facilities and environmental specialist at Ohio State University (OSU), and Glen Arnold, Putnam County Extension agent. OSU rural sociologist Jeff Sharp will present information about "Perceptions of Concentrated Animal Feeding Operations." Wrapping up the presentations will be Luther Tweeten, OSU professor emeritus of agricultural economics, who will focus on "Terrorism, Radicalism and Populism in Agriculture." The program will end with a panel discussion, moderated by Joe Cornely, OFBF director of corporate communications, featuring all the speakers. Additionally, a representative from U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service has been invited to provide an update on bovine spongiform encephalopathy, also known as "mad cow disease." Reservations are required by Feb. 16 to OLC. The fee for the meeting if paid before Feb. 16 is $25 per person. If paid after Feb. 16, the fee is $35 per person.
