Ecology publication wins award

Ohio Farm Bureau Federation’s Agricultural Ecology department won the All Ohio Chapter of the Soil and Water Conservation Society’s Award for Excellence in a general information or popular publication for "Land and Legacy: Report on voluntary actions Ohio farmers are taking to enhance our land." The award recognizes individuals who promote the society’s purpose of fostering "the science and art of soil, water and related natural resources management to achieve sustainability."

"Land and Legacy" celebrates the legacy of conservation on individual farms in Ohio and provides insights into the types of practices individual farmers are undertaking to improve their operations and the environment around them. Through a series of 20 producer profiles, "Land and Legacy" highlights the understanding Ohio farmers have about the delicate balance between producing food for today and leaving a legacy for tomorrow.

"Ohio's agricultural producers are a humble and modest group of individuals. They go about their day-to-day business, producing our food while being stewards of our natural resources, never once patting themselves on the back.," according to OFBF Director of Environmental Research Larry Antosch. "‘Land and Legacy’ was a story that had to be told to let everyone know that Ohio's farmers are leaders in protecting our natural resources."

"Land and Legacy" has been distributed to county agricultural ecology coordinators for their use in programs such as Farm/City Week and Earth Day. It also is used in OFBF trade shows and other educational opportunities.

Former Agricultural Ecology intern Heath Eisele, OFBF Vice President for Agricultural Ecology Constance Jackson and OFBF Promotion and Education Director Pat Petzel were involved in the project.
