Fruit growers to tour OARDC research sites

This year’s Ohio Fruit Growers’ Society (OFGS) annual tour will feature an up-close look at research being conducted at OARDC in Wooster.

The tour, scheduled for June 30, will feature looks at horticultural plots and disease and insect control programs. Tours will be run concurrently from 8 to 11 a.m. and will be held rain or shine.

The horticultural tour will include six stops showing the use of windbreaks to control spray drift, fruit rootstock evaluations, apple variety evaluations, weed control in young fruit plantings, grape research and blackberry variety research.

The disease and insect control tour will show research on reduced spray drift, increased honey bee populations, new fungicides, insecticide and pheromone options for moth control, organic strawberry production, and Asian lady beetle control and their impact on grape production. The pest control tour will count for one hour of update credit for Pesticide Applicator Training.

After lunch and an OFGS business meeting, participants will tour OARDC’s Secrest Arboretum. Other university specialists will be available to answer questions as will commercial exhibitors.

Registration begins at 7 a.m. with cost for the day’s activities $15 for individual OFGS members or $20 for OFGS member families. Nonmembers pay an extra $5. For more information, contact the Ohio Fruit Growers Society at 614-246-8290.
