River Valley Region - Hamilton County Farm Bureau
Hamilton County Farm Bureau and the Cincinnati Horticultural Society cooperated to bring different aspects of agriculture to Fountain Square in downtown Cincinnati March 26. "Ag on the Square" featured a cow and calf, ewe and lamb, goat and kid, two llamas, many different breeds of chickens and rabbits and many different flowers and horticulture items. "The goal of this program is to show the urban population the importance of agriculture in their city, county, state and world," said John Walter, OFBF organization director for Hamilton, Montgomery and Warren counties. "We like to show people that we produce a safe and abundant food supply." Walter said hundreds of people visited the square between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. and the response was overwhelming. "People wanted to know ‘What is that?’ ‘How old is that?’ ‘Is that from Hamilton County?’ and ‘Did you raise that?’" Walter also said the event was a good time to get the farmers and producers face-to-face with their customers. Information about Farm Bureau and the horticultural society was distributed and coloring books and soy crayons were handed out. "Ag on the Square was a means for showing off some of agriculture’s products and byproducts. "The event was well attended, and we only hope to get bigger and better with every year," Walter said. "With the help of the local media, it is becoming more popular with each event. Three local television stations featured Ag on the Square on their news shows." | |
