Profiles Volunteer As membership chairperson, Phyllis Garn has helped Ottawa County Farm Bureau win the Golden Tractor Award for the past 19 years. Garn also serves on the county Farm Bureau board. She and her husband, Ivan, are members of the Clodbusters Advisory Council, and she previously served as the advisory council chair. The Garns work at the Ottawa County Farm Bureau fair booth each summer. "It’s necessary to be a part of Farm Bureau if you’re in agriculture. The more you get involved, the more you get out of it," Garn said. "We enjoy the monthly get-togethers with our advisory council, and it really keeps us up-to-date with ag issues." The Garns have owned their farm since 1964 and, in that time, raised just about everything under the sun. Currently they raise grains. Garn is a retired postmaster and currently manages the Oakwood Manor Apartments. She is president of the county’s Farmers Union and serves on the Ottawa County Senior Citizens Advisory board and Ottawa County Transportation Association board. Phyllis and Ivan have three children and nine grandchildren and reside in Oak Harbor. They attend St. Paul’s Lutheran Church. | |
