Youth receive introduction to Farm Bureau

Ohio Farm Bureau, in cooperation with regional supervisors and organization directors, hosted a summer leadership development conference for 135 youths at Bluffton College. Youths participated in Farm Bureau in Action, which is a simulation of how advisory councils, Farm Bureau boards and the policy development process work together in the legislative process. Issues discussed included ethanol, gay marriages, abortion and school uniforms. In cooperation with Nationwide, youths learned about the dangers of drunken driving. Other sessions included choral music, dancing, cooperative organization and manners. Elective sessions included agricultural ecology, promotion and education and teamwork. Youths also presented skits in which they educated each other about vital safety issues. For the first time, a Discussion Meet was offered at the conference. Special guests included Rep. Steve Reinhard and members of MADD. Pictured above, youth participate in the teamwork elective, where youths learn to cooperate. One of the activities allowed team members to encourage each other as they were blindfolded and attempted to pick up pennies and place them in a cup.
