Four thousand pounds of potatoes. That’s how many potatoes the Delaware County Farm Bureau donated for needy families and seniors during the holiday season. The collection was organized by People in Need (PIN), which helps those less fortunate.

Farm Bureau donated five-pound bags of potatoes for senior citizens and 10-pound bags for needy families. The potatoes were part of a food care package, which was distributed Dec. 9 for seniors. Two days later, needy families visited the Delaware County fairgrounds to pick up the potatoes and other food, along with clothing and gifts for children.

The donations helped about 350 families and 125 seniors, said Mary Lou Wilgus, a PIN board member and Farm Bureau volunteer. Farm Bureau has donated potatoes during the holidays for about four years.

Wilgus said the event went very smoothly and that it was rewarding to help so many people.
