New teacher resources available from AFBFAmerican Farm Bureau’s Foundation for Agriculture has published new educational resources that help both students and teachers learn about agriculture. They are available from Ohio Farm Bureau via county offices. A new reader for fourth through sixth grade students, "Beef Ag Mag" has been developed under contract with the Cattlemen’s Beef Board and AFBF. The reader supplements curriculum areas including health, social studies, math, science and language arts. Illinois Agriculture in the Classroom and Illinois Farm Bureau developed the prototype for the reader. "Beef Ag Mag" covers a range of topics such as nutrition, food safety information, production information, land use, breeds, why cattle can eat grass, a career section, beef by-products and the sports connection. Each packet of "Beef Ag Mag" includes a teacher activity and evaluation form that has been developed to increase teacher use and feedback. "Beef Ag Mag" is available in classroom sets of 30 with activity guide and evaluation form for $5. Ag Mags also are available for dairy, pizza, careers and biotechnology. A second new educational resource from the AFB Foundation for Agriculture is a 34-page teacher’s guide titled, "Agriculture and the Environment." The guide covers six topics: agricultural and environmental issues, pesticides and pest management, food safety and regulation, water quality, understanding wetlands and endangered species. The new publication also includes examples of student science experiments that relate to these topics. The guide is intended for use in middle school/junior high school. It is available for $3 per copy. | |
