County Farm Bureaus receive AFBF funding

ive of 25 national awards given to Ohio

American Farm Bureau Foundation for Agriculture recently awarded five Ohio county Farm Bureaus a mini-grant of $500 each from the White-Reinhardt Fund for Education for agriculture literacy projects. Marsha Purcell, managing director of the AFB Foundation for Agriculture said the foundation intends to continue the program for next year. OFBF will provide application information when it is available.

  • Athens
Athens County hosts an Agriculture Awareness Day for more than 400 fourth grade students that incorporates the COSI On Wheels Agriculture Adventures outreach program and several guest speakers. The mini-grant will help defray the cost of classroom activity kits to extend the one-day event.

  • Fayette
New materials will be purchased for elementary teachers’ Agriculture Lending Trunks. These new resources will reinforce the connection from farm to food, the diversity of agriculture, what Native Americans offered to agriculture and how farmers care for livestock and natural resources.

  • Licking
A life-sized fiberglass cow will be purchased to use in school assemblies, farm tours and public events. This Ag in the Classroom project is a partnership between Farm Bureau and OSU Extension.

  • Pike
Teacher Resource Binders will be revised to complement the county Agriculture Awareness Day for all third graders. The binders will provide follow-up lesson plans, experiments, assignments and worksheets to extend what the students learn at the one-day event.

  • Scioto
Mini-grant funding will provide teacher learning packets to expand upon information 525 participating fourth grade students receive at a one-day event called Agriculture Adventures Day. This jointly sponsored event between Farm Bureau and OSU Extension incorporates current learning standards into the presentations.
