New equine insurance addresses liability facing horse owners

With more than 160,000 horses within the state, countless Ohioans who own or board horses are challenged to find the right kind of insurance for their operations. In particular, the availability of liability coverage for horse owners has not kept pace with the steady growth of horse numbers throughout the state.

In response to requests from Ohio Farm Bureau members, Nationwide Agribusiness Insurance has developed a new equine liability program, which is endorsed by OFBF. As two endorsements to Nationwide’s AgriChoice farm policy, the new program allows members to tailor their AgriChoice policy to include equine operations.

The endorsements protect against liabilities that members face from horse boarding or breeding operations. The program also protects farmers who provide training on the farm for the horses of others, whether incidental to breeding operations or ongoing.

An optional coverage can be added to protect against liability for the injury or death of other people’s horses that are in the care, custody and control of the farmer.

"We are very pleased to be able to expand our coverage options to meet the needs of this growing segment of the agricultural community," said Jerry Hillard of Nationwide Agribusiness Insurance. "We value our strong relationship with Ohio Farm Bureau and look forward to being able to serve an even larger number of members."

More than 8,000 Farm Bureau families in Ohio already are insured through the AgriChoice farm policy from Nationwide, which also is endorsed by Ohio Farm Bureau.

"AgriChoice provides the most comprehensive farm owner coverage available in the marketplace," Hillard said. "It contains standard features not offered by most other companies, including equipment breakdown and rental reimbursement on farm equipment."

Farm Bureau members also automatically receive additional coverages not available to non-members, such as lock replacement and identity theft expense coverage, Hillard said. Members receive a preferred price on AgriChoice coverages as well.
