River Valley Region - Preble County Farm BureauPublished on 07/11/2005
About 170 people didn't let the hot, humid weather prevent them from participating in Preble County Farm Bureau's second annual Buckeye Bridge Bike Ride. The June 25 event featured three rides: 15 miles with a tour of two bridges, 25 miles with four bridges or 72 miles with seven bridges. Net profits benefited the county’s United Way. Farmers set out their combines, tractors and other farm equipment along the bike route, said Mandy Daniels, organization director for Darke, Miami and Preble counties. Farm Bureau members and others drove along the route to help riders if they became too tired or had a flat tire. At stops along the route, volunteers handed out drinks, bananas, apples and grapes to help replenish riders. Daniels said she was pleased that the number of riders increased this year. Last year there were 150 riders and at least 40 more people were expected to participate this year but didn't because of the heat. "All in all it went really well. Most of the people were from Cincinnati or Dayton and not from rural areas," Daniels said. "They got to see the diverse landscape of Preble County." Next year's ride will be on June 24. | |
