Award recognizes farmland conservationPublished on 07/25/2005A conservation group that has helped keep more than a million acres of farmland in production wants to reward a farmer with $10,000. The American Farmland Trust (AFT) is accepting nominations for the 10th annual Steward of the Land award until Nov. 4. The prize is presented to a farmer, farm family or rancher who best exemplifies AFT's mission of stopping the loss of productive farmland and promoting farming practices that lead to a healthy environment. According to AFT, preference will be given to nominees who use farming practices that lead to a productive farm in a healthy environment, work to develop policies and programs for farmland protection at the local, state and regional levels and demonstrate leadership by protecting their own farm or ranch from development. To be eligible, nominees must be living and actively farming in the United States. "As the 2007 Farm Bill approaches, it's more important than ever to show examples of the many faces of agriculture working so hard to implement good stewardship practices on their land," said AFT President Ralph Grossi. Nomination forms are available by calling AFT at 800-886-5170 ext. 3011 or by going to www.ofbf.org and clicking on Featured Links. | |
