Horse show raises money for mounted police unit

Horse lovers gathered July 2 for Cuyahoga County Farm Bureau's second annual horse show to benefit the Cleveland Mounted Police Unit.

Held at the Cuyahoga County Fairgrounds, the event raised $2,000 for the horse police unit, which was deactivated because of budget cuts. The hope is to eventually raise enough money to reactivate the historic unit, which dates back to 1877. The money will be used to help feed and shelter the horses, which are used for special events.

Some of the police officers who now ride in cars returned to ride their assigned horses, said Anita Cook, the county Farm Bureau's organization director. The police officers and Cleveland Metroparks Rangers presented the colors for the opening ceremony.

Volunteers from the Farm Bureau and Silver Spurs 4H Club organized and worked the event. People competed in several classes, including showmanship, open pleasure, open halter, musical stalls and flags.

About 120 people attended the show, which was down from last year. Cook said the show had competition from two horse shows in neighboring counties, as well as the Fourth of July weekend.

"We're going to be checking further ahead on when and where horse shows are being held," she said. "Still, it raised a lot of money and several people got ribbons this year."
