COSI/Farm Bureau exhibit brings farm to the city

A three-day exhibit at COSI in Columbus is bringing the farm to the city.

Franklin County Farm Bureau is sponsoring the July 29-31 "Farm Days: Little Seeds, Big Tractors" exhibit, which features large John Deere equipment and a kiddie tractor pull obstacle course outside the COSI building. JD Equipment Inc. is providing the equipment. Farm Bureau and John Deere representatives will be on hand to answer questions, and several commodity groups will have exhibits inside COSI. Volunteers will be handing out plastic bags with quick germinating seeds and moistened cotton balls inside, allowing kids to see a seed germinate by the end of the day.

On July 29, the county Farm Bureau is hosting "Family Friday Night" from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. At 6 p.m., participants can watch the traveling COSI on Wheels show about how farm products are used to make pizza. There also will be a farmers' share pizza, which will inform the public about how much the cost of a pizza goes back to the farmer. The first 250 people at the show will receive coupons, allowing them to buy small pizzas at the concession stand for 50 cents, about a $3 savings, said Tim Street, organization director for Franklin and Delaware counties.

The idea for the exhibit came from Neall Weber, Franklin County's promotion and education chairman.

"He's driven the cart on this deal. He went to John Deere and got everybody on board," Street said. "This is a good opportunity to get out and see the big equipment and learn a little bit about it."
